    Wood Gas

    Seems this was popular before and during WWII though I'd never heard of it!

    A wood gasifier takes wood chips, sawdust, charcoal, coal, rubber or similar materials as fuel and burns these incompletely in a fire box, producing solid ashes and soot  and Wood Gas 

    There are videos on Utube showing this in action even a car running on it!
